Spooky Greetings...

Lucie and Ryan wish you a very Happy Halloween! Decked out in their pumpkin and ghost hats, they enjoyed their first trip to the beach yesterday and saw (or at least slept through) their first sunset.

No trick or treating this year, but they are already planning costumes for next year!

The Double Pat

Ryan and Lucie have enjoyed the past two weeks with Chris' mother Laura. It makes such a difference to have the help, especially when she arrives early in the morning refreshed and ready to help when we are at the very end of our energy reserves.

Here you see a demonstration of Laura's famous "double pat". She perfected this move and was able to keep two often hungry babies satisfied while their parents napped, showered, or simply had some "hands-free" time. Grandmas know all the right moves!

Entertainment

Lucie and Ryan are having a great time this week playing on their activity mat. They are getting more and more alert each day, and enjoying their daily play time. Plus, Ryan doesn't seem to mind if Lucie tries to eat his ear...

When it comes to entertaining us, I think every new parent should have Tivo. No need to watch infomercials at 3 am feedings -- dial up Tivo and catch up on Survivor instead! Unfortunately Tivo can have a mind of its own sometimes. Lately its been recording the Denise Austin daily workout every morning no matter how many times I give it the "thumbs-down" (Tivo owners know what I'm talking about). Excuse me, Tivo, the doctor said no sit-ups until 6 weeks postpartum. I don't appreciate the hints - at least give me a few more days!

Vital Stats

Another week, another wellness checkup. Ryan is up to 7 pounds, 13 ounces and a wiry 21 inches. Lucie weighs a robust 7 lbs, 3 ozs and 20.5 inches.

The great migration from bottle-fed formula to breast-fed milk has slowed down their growth rate. As our pediatrician explained, most parents overfeed newborns using a bottle, but the twins are able to regulate the amount (and still be fully satisfied -- see post-feeding photo). They should gain about half a pound per week for the next month or so.

In Case You're Wondering What Happened to Me...

I've received so many supportive emails and phone messages as I transition the twins from bottle to breastfeeding. It's been a struggle, but every day gets better and feels more natural. After about a week of multi-hour appointments with militant lactation consultants (ask me about that sometime) and some trying nights, Ryan and Lucie are almost 100% converted to breastfeeding. No more mounds of bottles to clean & prepare -- time to celebrate!

Anyway, I'm sorry that I haven't been able to return emails or phone calls. I definitely hope to soon. In the meantime, you can find me attached to a boppy and at least one baby for about 20 hours a day. Please send food, water and clean sweat pants...

The Call of the Laundry

Between blankets and burp clothes, onesies and snap shirts, the laundry piles up quickly. The twins manage to dirty about a wash load per day. Fortunately, our on-site grandmother laundry service keeps up with demand.

Plus, we have a plentiful supply of replacement outfits and linens so we rarely have to double up receiving blankets. Though it does happen on occasion...

The Unkindest Cut

Even though it's not medically necessary, we decided to have Ryan circumsized. Now that we've had four days to recover, Megan would tell you that it was harder on her, but I'm not so sure Ryan would agree. Megan and Lucie conveniently went for a walk during the procedure leaving Ryan and I to face the "clamp". With a little help from the local anethesia and suger-water sucked from my finger, he survived with minimal discomfort.

Having witnessed a circumcision up close, I wonder why the Circumcision Clamp isn't listed under banned torture devices in the Geneva Convention? While we're at it, the speculum should probably be added as well.

Champagne and Burp Cloths

If someone had told me on our wedding day that five years later we'd have two kids, I'm not sure that I would have believed them. I guess it's a much easier feat to achieve when you get two at the same time!

Hopefully Lucie and Ryan will let us share a nice meal together tonight. Maybe later we can fit in a little getaway once the twins are sleeping through the night and can spend a weekend with family. For now, I wouldn't want to spend our anniversary any other way than to stare down into the faces of our little ones...

Fall Clothes

We try to go for a walk every day. Exposure to sunlight is supposed to help the twins sleep better at night though it doesn't seem to be working on Ryan and Lucie. Tonight, by the time everyone was changed, fed, burped, and bundled, the sun had long since departed so we set out for a nighttime stroll.

First mistake was not taking a flashlight, strobelight, or a light of any kind to signal a stroller crossing the street. We'll have to get one of those blinking bike lights in the future.

Though they were dressed warmly and nicely color-coordinated by yours truly (see photo), our second mistake was tucking blankets in the stroller under their arms instead of over. While both of them love having their arms free to swing about, the cool temperature meant some very cold hands after our 40 minute walk.

An Ounce a Day

Two more clean bills of health at today's peditrician's visit. Ryan tipped the scales at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and Lucie is now 6 pounds, 12 ounces. Both of them are gaining about 1 ounce per day.

We expect that rate to slow down as we attempt to ween them off the bottle. Unfortunately for Megan and me, the twins aren't able to get as much from the breast as from the bottle. Since their daily intake remains unchanged, smaller feedings means more feedings. So we're back up to 12 a day (just like during the hyper-feeding period) and once again testing the limits of sleep deprivation.

The Family

Our first family portrait. No fancy backdrop at Sears, no special lighting, no poses with hands on chins, but I think the shot turned out pretty well.

And this despite getting 3 hours of sleep the night before (and 4.5 the night before that, and 3.5 the night before that -- you get the pattern).

Super Boppy

Yesterday, we bought the mother of all boppies. Designed especially for twins, it looks like a sofa cushion with a large bite missing. Our dream is that Megan will eventually be able to simultaneously breastfeed both babies with the aid of the super boppy. Obviously I love the idea as it makes my participation unnecessary. Dare to dream...

Happiest Babies on the Block

On the recommendation of several friends, we bought a copy of the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. It took almost a week to find the time to watch, but after a single viewing tonight, I don't think it is an exageration to day that the video will change our lives.

Swaddle, Side, Shush, Swing, Suck is our new mantra. Even without a fancy mechanical swing or white noise-maker, both Lucie and Ryan fell into deep sleeps after our first attempt. We've received a lot of thoughtful baby gifts, but this DVD is now at the top of our lists.

Of course, we aim to have the two happiest babies on the block...

Fun times with family

Lucie and Ryan enjoyed their weekend with their Chris' family. How nice to be held and snuggled for hours on end! That is their dream life. Our dream life is having mutliple feeders and burpers on hand. Special thanks to Uncle Greg for being our first overnight guest and his willingness to awake every two hours for feedings.

Boppies for babies

Boppy pillows are one of those strange inventions that every parent knows about, yet people without kids have no idea about them. We use them primarily to prop babies/arms during feeding, but Lucie and Ryan also like to spend "tummy time" (strengthening neck muscles) on the pillows as well.

And, in a pinch, the pillows make handy cradles.

Premie Graduation

The twins are no longer premies! OK, that's our unofficial proclamation, but not only did Lucie and Ryan start wearing Newborn diapers and clothes (finally into the "0- 3 months" category), but they are gaining weight at a very fast pace. No doubt making up for lost time, even the pediatrician expressed surprise when, at their appointment this morning, Lucie weighed in at 6 pounds 4 ounces (and 20 inches) and Ryan at 6 pounds 14 ounces (20.5 inches). That's almost a pound each in 8 days. They're now big enough to track on the regular Newborn growth scale.

On a side note, we now have a very nice collection of gently worn doll clothes, primarily in yellow and green. Any takers?

Walk in the Park

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon so we decided to do what parents do in such circumstances. After quickly loading up necessary supplies, the four of us set off for our first family trip to the local park. A quick five minute walk and we were a Norman Rockwell painting -- new parents strolling through the park while kids played in the background.

Even though Lucie and Ryan slept the entire time, we'd like to think they enjoyed the trip.

Diaper Genies

Every baby's home should have one, two if you have twins. A genie that makes dirty diapers (and their smells) disappear. Absolutely magical invention. An unanticipated benefit of the Diaper Genie -- it provides a way to track the number of diapers used. In the first 8 days the twins were home, we went through 140 diapers and 168 wipes.

Why is it that the smaller the diaper, the fewer diapers in a package? Consider that Premie diapers are sold in packs of 20, Newborns come in 40 diaper bundles, and regular infant (1, 2, etc.) diapers are sold by the gross ton.

Thank Goodness for Grandparents

It takes a village to raise a child - and for sleep deprived parents of twins, we could use a small metropolis. Lucky for us, we have amazing parents to help us along the way.

Since Ryan and Lucie have come home from the hospital, the grandparents (moms during the week and dads and siblings coming in for support on the weekends) have set up a schedule to be here with us through November. This past week with my mom has been amazing. Not only does she help with cooking, laundry, feeding and holding babies, but more importantly she provides much needed moral support and reassurance. We're looking forward to the next set of grandparents to arrive in the coming week.

Hyper-feeding

Sleep for us is now only a vague memory. It seems the twins have entered their first growth spurt and now want to eat every two hours (instead of three). And they are much quicker to let us know when it's time. Considering their new found vocal cords, the entire building must know when it's time.

Total sleep from Tuesday 9am through Thursday 1am = 3 hours. In three separate one hour increments. The baby books suggest this could last for a few more days. Very poor planning as I went back to work today. Fortunately parenting provides it's own source of constant adrenaline. Off to bed shortly -- please let the hyper-feeding end soon.

Identification

They take security pretty seriously in the NICU. All four of us were issued id bracelets almost immediately after birth. Lucie and Ryan each got two matching id's -- one on the wrist and another on the ankle. Megan and I had two as well, but one for each baby.

The bracelets were our only ticket to enter the NICU so they stayed on for 12 days worth of showers, meals, and work. Kind of like going to a great concert that you want to remember every day.

Pediatrician's office

The twins had their second car ride this morning as we all packed up for the 2 mile drive to the pediatrician's office. Ryan is now 20 inches, 5 lbs 14 ozs and Lucie is 19.5 inches, 5 lbs 6 ozs*. Very good sign that each is now above their birth and discharge weight -- some milk must actually be getting into their stomachs rather than just dribbling down their chins. I guess Pediatricians watch to make sure babies gain weight after going home, both to insure no health issues and gauge parenting. Everyone passed the test.

Our only complaint was the excruciating wait. Their doctor was 90 minutes behind schedule by 11am. Personally, I think order of visit should be inversely proportional to number of babies. Singletons at the back of the line, super multiples move to the front. Knowing the craziness of twins, I'd gladly let parents with triplets go on ahead.

* Did you know that you can type "50 cm in inches" into google and it will return the conversion? Is there anything that company does that isn't ridiculously cool?

Belly Buttons

Because of the extra risks with the c-section delivery, I wasn't allowed to cut the cord for either of the twins. Far from disappointing, the rule meant avoiding an upclose look at Megan's abdomen pulled apart. Instead, after the initial health assessments, I cut the 'ceremonial' cord. The doctors intentionally leave an extra 3 inches on the baby-side just for dads. Very rubbery stuff, but the job was quickly completed.

That still left about an inch of umbilical cord attached to each baby. These remants naturally fall off in 7 to 10 days leaving only the belly button. Lucie's fell off on Friday and Ryan's fell off this afternoon. Dried umbilical cord is not particularly attractive as it dries up and discolors so we were happy to see them go.

Is dried umbilical cord appropriate baby-book material?

Bathing

With all of their baby skin folds, it took a good twenty minutes each to bathe Lucie and Ryan. Of course, most of that time was spent debating whether or not we should get their ears wet (we decided against), their belling-buttons wet (yes, but we'll ask the Pediatrician tomorrow), or use soap on their faces (baby books say just warm water). If Dr. Spock had a 1-800 number, then we would have called several times.

Fortunately for us, the twins tolerated the sponge bath and sink rinse pretty well. I only wish they made those towels with the built-in hoods for adults.

Family Visitation

Since Lucie and Ryan are the first grandchildren in both families, they have had lots of welcomed visitors over their first two weeks. Rachel and Jason's arrival this afternoon means that the twins have now met all of their grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Based on initial reactions, Rachel has staked out a clear position are favorite aunt...

Not only did they buy groceries, cook dinner, and provide opportunities for me and Megan to nap (many, many thanks), but Rachel and Jason also got valuable practice for the future.

Sleeping Arrangement

So far, the Lucie and Ryan are successfully sharing a cosleeper — think of a crib with an elevated floor and one side lower than the other three. The height of the lower side is even with the height of our mattress. The idea is to provide an easy way to check in on and extract the twins from the cosleeper without getting out of bed. The cosleeper provides the closeness of actually cosleeper (the entire family sharing a bed), but avoids the rollover/suffocate scenario. Obviously that's a trade worth making.

Hopefully Lucie and Ryan can continue this arrangement until they are big enough to each need their own crib. For the time being, at least Ryan doesn't mind sharing his blanket with Lucie (thanks Jen!).
