Big Three Year Old: Jake

To our Jake, you sweet, lovable, social, athletic, opinionated and fun-seeking boy; you're three (or "free" as you like to declare). There's so much to capture about you at this age. I want to write it all down so I can always be reminded of this wonderful moment in time.

You thrive on being around other people. When Ryan and Lucie's school starts back up after a day off or a week's vacation, you feel a little sad not having your sister and brother around. All is good in the world if you have siblings, or even better a few of their friends too, by your side.

You've started to attend a preschool one morning a week and you absolutely love it. You ask all week about when you get to go, and wait by the front door with your backpack on when that special day arrives. You especially love that Daddy gets to take you in the morning, continuing a tradition of Daddy preschool drop-off started with Lucie and Ryan.

You've grown and developed so much in the past six months. Your language skills have taken off, and you need much less translation of Jake-speak when talking to people who don't know you well. You've picked up potty training, and after a few shaky weeks, are now dependable enough to wear underwear all day long, even during naps. You love the "Planes" underwear that Aunt Rach sent you for Valentine's Day, and think we need to send all of your training pants to "anudda baby".

You are a little man on the move, running, jumping, leaping and trying to start wrestling matches everywhere you go. When it comes to quiet time, you love to read stories and paint. You recently picked out a watercoloring book based on the movie Frozen and love painting in it. The woman at the bookstore thought you might prefer one about Lighting McQueen or Super Heroes, but no, you had to have the Frozen book because it was the first one you saw.

Speaking of movies, I am reminded of another special thing about you. You have had many experiences and adventures at a much younger age than your sister and brother. You've been to multiple feature length movies in the theatre, sitting at the edge of your seat the entire time.

You've learned to throw a baseball, play iPad games intended more for eight year olds than three year olds, gone tubing at full speed down hills at Big Bear, attended countless baseball, gymnastics, soccer and softball practices for your siblings, stayed up until 10pm dancing at your uncle's wedding, and seen your fair share of school plays. If the big kids get to do it, most likely you will too. In many ways, you do not lead the life of a typical three year old.

You talk constantly in the car, looking for trash trucks, requesting your favorite music and letting me know if you think I'm going the wrong way or parking in the bad spot. You make each and every one of my days fun because you're in it.

Your favorite stuffed loved ones are Boo the dog, Foxey, and Hannah the panda. You love peach yogurt, hard-boiled and scrambled eggs, and fruit. You have a lot to say about your clothes, and prefer short-sleeve shirts and pants with pockets. When it comes to TV, your favorite shows are Curious George and Caillou. Your version of Bruno Mars' song "Treasure" is the cutest thing ever.

Jake, as your swim teacher put it, you're such a happy and easy-going guy. The funny thing is, Ryan's swim teacher said the same about him at this age. I feel so lucky to watch you learn and grow each day.

Happy third birthday little dude! In your famous words, "you good guy".
