Creative Bathing

With a few extra towels, just about any kitchen sink can be turned into a bath. Over the holidays, Lucie (top/left) and Ryan (bottom/right) bathed in sinks at multiple locations. Here they demonstrate the versitility of my parents' kitchen.

Now that we're back home, this may be an opportune time to tell the grandparents that Ryan 'christened' each sink according to his custom...

My Christmas Vacation

And what a first Christmas it was! Lucie and Ryan had many adventures over their holiday vacation. Highlights included spending Christmas day with their entire extended family (Aunt Rach and Uncle Greg pictured here); cutting down a tree at the Christmas tree farm (they spent the time in the warm office eating lunch with two big dogs); their first plane trip and road trip; and meeting many family friends of all ages.

I learned some new tricks - the most complicated one being breastfeeding both babies in the front seat of our car at several rest stops along our trip home. It was quite a feat balancing little arms and legs on the emergency brake and door arm rest, but it didn't faze the babies who seemed to enjoy the new mealtime scenery. We're so lucky to have such good little travelers.

Glorious Sleep

No, Lucie and Ryan haven't suddenly started sleeping through the night. Instead, Megan and the twins got a headstart on the holidays by travelling to her parents a few days ago. And while I miss them terribly, it hasn't prevented me from sleeping 8 to 10 hours a nights. Blissful, uninterrupted sleep where no one has poopy diapers to change, spits up on me, or decides that 4am seems like a perfectly reasonable time to start the day.

Like a bear hibernating for winter, I'm storing up sleep to get me through the long nights still to come once our family is reunited.

More Smiley

Lucie was at her best after a recent feeding. She must laughed and giggled for 10 minutes or so while Megan and I made faces.

Ryan has started to smile as well -- we just haven't managed to photograph him in the act yet. We may need a camera with a faster shutter speed...

Good Times

At nearly three months age, Lucie and Ryan demonstrate a wide range of emotions. While there has always been plenty of fussiness (particularly in the evening) and crying (especially when hungry), they now have increasingly frequent bouts of happiness, curiousity, and day-dreaming.

Here Andrew and Ryan show off two examples.

Baby Gear: The Sling

The sling dates back to a more primitive time before batteries and plastic. Vibration is provided by the sway of natural motion and music comes from the parental heartbeat (or dad's indigestion as the case may be). It's just you and the baby as Lucie demonstrates in our New Native Natural Baby Carrier.

It also makes a handy bib if worn during dinner. Although all too often I end up wiping spagetti sauce off Lucie's cheeck afterwards.

Parents of twins should buy one and try it out. You may prefer Baby Bjorn's (more on those in another post) or find that the babies don't like the curled-up position the sling forces them into. In our case, Ryan won't tolerate one minute in the sling while Lucie can happily spend an hour snuggled tightly.

Splish, Splash, I Was Taking a Bath

We've heard some parents bathe their babies every day. Wow, I'm impressed. With the assembly line we have to set up, we're lucky if we manage baths twice a week.

While Chris bathes one baby, I entertain the other waiting to get in the tub. Then it's a quick change and I take the bathed baby for spa services (brushed hair, nails, and clean pj's) while the second baby plays in the bubbles. Afterwards, we all collapse on the couch and enjoy the sent of our clean little ones. Cuddling a warm, freshly washed baby is the sweetest of endings.

Dance Fever

Lucie and Ryan are starting to self-sooth which means we often don't have to go through the hour-long routine to get them to sleep. Wonderful development as it makes nap-time a more frequent event. But it does mean that they aren't always swaddled when they sleep -- leading to some very interesting sleep positions...

Please note that this photo was originally intended to show off Aunt Rachel's talent with a knitting needle. Ryan seems to love his custom designer duds.

The Return of Sleep

Sleep, our long-lost friend, has finally returned.

Countless friends and family have advised us that eventually Lucie and Ryan will start sleeping consistently. But when you haven't slept more than 90 minutes continously since September, those words ring a little hollow.

However, last week a new milestone was reached as we're now only getting up twice a night for feedings/changings. Megan and I are able to sleep about 5 hours a night. Sleep is still spread over three cycles, none longer than 3 hours, but that's a far cry from our October and November experience of 3 to 4 hours a night in one hour cycles.

Baby Gear: The Bouncy Chair

One of our earliest gifts, the Carters Bouncer, has proven to be invaluable. Once again, it's amazing to see the technology included in baby products -- vibration (an absolute must), 4 songs, volume control, and two positions. This chair has more computing power than the Apollo mission.

Both Lucie and Ryan prefer the Carters version to the Fisher Price Baby Papasan. They seem to be much more comfortable lying relatively flat whereas they almost slide out of the tilted Papasan.

Parents of twins need two of these or one if you also have a swing.

Smiley

I have a cousin who smiled so much as a little boy that most people still call him "Smiley" 25 years later. Based on her early photogenic nature, Lucie and Kyle may have to start sharing that moniker.

Ryan and Lucie can MOO, can you?

Just like Mr. Brown in their favorite Dr. Seuss book, Ryan and Lucie are learning to make all sorts of wonderful noises. This morning I heard squeeks, coos, giggles, and something that Chris swears sounded like "hi" out of their little mouths. It's so much fun to listen to their little conversations and smile and coo along. Next thing we know, their vocal cords will be warmed up and just like in the book, they'll be responding to, "What does a cow say?" I think they'll do a rousing "MOO!!"

Baby Gear: The Swing

One of the most recent additions to our baby arsenal is the Fisher Price Cradle Swing. This is not your parents' swing. It comes complete with 6 speeds, electronic mobile, 4 built-in songs, 2 position cradle, and side-to-side or front-to-back motion -- all powered by 4 D cell batteries.

In short, it is a marvel of modern of twin parenting. If Ryan is demanding full attention, we can put Lucie in the swing for 30 blissful, hands-free minutes. Maybe an hour if we're lucky and it's nap time.

Parents of twins need one of these. It's rare for both babies to be interested in the swing at that same time.

Diaper racket

Why is it that the diapers get less expensive as a baby grows? The NICU used Pampers and we've stayed loyal to that brand, but Premies (P) cost $6.99 for a 20 pack (35¢ each), Newborns (N) cost $12.99 for a 40 pack (32¢ each), and Swadlers (1) cost $17.89 for a 100 pack (18¢ each).

Fortunately for us, Lucie and Ryan have both graduated to the "1" size so we can buy in bulk. Here they demonstrate their new girth.

Day at the Zoo

Within the stroller stride community, the zoo is known as a great place to take babies. With miles of even pavement, plenty of bathrooms and benches, and lots of snack options, there is something for both parents and babies. Based on our visit, we'd agree even though Lucie and Ryan slept through the entire trip.

Top: Lucie, Ryan, and Megan gather around mom's favorite animal.
Bottom: I thought the wandering peacock helped frame a nice shot. Megan thought he was way too close for comfort.

No blog updates?

It's been over a week since the last blog update. Based on the frequecy of inquiries, many fans of Lucie and Ryan have noticed as well.

The big change is that this week Megan is flying solo during the day. After two months of immeasurable help from our fantastic grandmother support staff, it was time to try it by ourselves. I'm happy to report that everyone survived, even thrived, week one. Daily walks to the mall are the trio's current favorite activity. It also helps that Lucie and Ryan are starting to sleep a little more consistently at night, but more on that topic in another post.

Happy Turkey Day!

Ryan and Lucie wish you a very happy Thanksgiving. Their party clothes made it all the way through Thanksgiving dinner. Pretty impressive! Once it was time for pumpkin pie, the footed sleepers came out.

My cousin Katie was good enough to let us use her room for feeding and changing. Just what every teenage girl wants in her bedroom -- dirty diapers!

Relaxing to the Soothing Sounds of...

... a vacuum cleaner? Ryan and Lucie's pal Erick loaned them his favorite CD, "For Crying Out Loud", which has quickly become a hit. The CD has 8 different tracks of white noise, with everything from a hairdryer to rain to crashing waves. Ryan and Lucie's personal favorite is the vacuum cleaner track which we keep on continuous repeat throughout the night. While it drives us bonkers, it obviously is loved by our little ones. We'll do anything for a few extra minutes sleep!

The Incredible Growing Babies

It's been three weeks since our last pediatrician's visit so we were anxious to get an update on Lucie and Ryan's growth. The scales confirmed what Megan and I are already knew -- our babies are growing. A lot.

Lucie: 8 lbs, 14 ozs and 21 inches
Ryan: 9 lbs, 12 ozs and 22 inches

The Paparazzi

It's absolutely amazing how many people stop to talk to you when pushing a double stroller. Some of the questions are simply hilarious to us - everything from "Are they twins?" to "Are they identical?" (especially after finding out they are boy/girl)

We also get a lot of attention from fellow twins parents including our UPS man who gives me a weekly update on breastfeeding teething twins (ouch!) and a truck driver who waived us down from his cab and yelled , "I have twin boys! Have fun!"

What's the Definition of Colic?

Anytime our babies have a rough night, we sleepily ask each other, "Do you think its colic?" Turns out many others wonder the same thing. It's the most popular topic at my breastfeeding support group where moms share all sorts of remedies from gripe water to a warm bath. Colic even hit the front page of the NY Times this week.

Turns out that if you have to wonder, your baby does not have colic. You'd know. Here Ryan demonstrates his best fussy face...

Now It's Your Turn to Smile

We've quickly learned that it's nearly impossible to get a good pose out of both babies at once. It's as if they have a secret agreement to only smile when the other is crying or rolling her eyes. This is just the beginning of twin language, I'm sure.

It's going to be a wild ride -- here's a classic example...

Hanging with Uncle AJ

Ryan and Lucie spent some quality time with Uncle Andrew last Friday night. He told them about college life - his Italian midterm, the latest at International House, and his plans to initiate new members of the Ultimate Frisbee team. Ryan told Andrew about his busy week including rolling over while playing on his activity gym, lots of eating and diaper changes, and one major crying fit in the Macy's children's section where he turned red and almost gave his mom a heart attack. Phew, what a week!

Spooky Greetings...

Lucie and Ryan wish you a very Happy Halloween! Decked out in their pumpkin and ghost hats, they enjoyed their first trip to the beach yesterday and saw (or at least slept through) their first sunset.

No trick or treating this year, but they are already planning costumes for next year!

The Double Pat

Ryan and Lucie have enjoyed the past two weeks with Chris' mother Laura. It makes such a difference to have the help, especially when she arrives early in the morning refreshed and ready to help when we are at the very end of our energy reserves.

Here you see a demonstration of Laura's famous "double pat". She perfected this move and was able to keep two often hungry babies satisfied while their parents napped, showered, or simply had some "hands-free" time. Grandmas know all the right moves!

Entertainment

Lucie and Ryan are having a great time this week playing on their activity mat. They are getting more and more alert each day, and enjoying their daily play time. Plus, Ryan doesn't seem to mind if Lucie tries to eat his ear...

When it comes to entertaining us, I think every new parent should have Tivo. No need to watch infomercials at 3 am feedings -- dial up Tivo and catch up on Survivor instead! Unfortunately Tivo can have a mind of its own sometimes. Lately its been recording the Denise Austin daily workout every morning no matter how many times I give it the "thumbs-down" (Tivo owners know what I'm talking about). Excuse me, Tivo, the doctor said no sit-ups until 6 weeks postpartum. I don't appreciate the hints - at least give me a few more days!

Vital Stats

Another week, another wellness checkup. Ryan is up to 7 pounds, 13 ounces and a wiry 21 inches. Lucie weighs a robust 7 lbs, 3 ozs and 20.5 inches.

The great migration from bottle-fed formula to breast-fed milk has slowed down their growth rate. As our pediatrician explained, most parents overfeed newborns using a bottle, but the twins are able to regulate the amount (and still be fully satisfied -- see post-feeding photo). They should gain about half a pound per week for the next month or so.

In Case You're Wondering What Happened to Me...

I've received so many supportive emails and phone messages as I transition the twins from bottle to breastfeeding. It's been a struggle, but every day gets better and feels more natural. After about a week of multi-hour appointments with militant lactation consultants (ask me about that sometime) and some trying nights, Ryan and Lucie are almost 100% converted to breastfeeding. No more mounds of bottles to clean & prepare -- time to celebrate!

Anyway, I'm sorry that I haven't been able to return emails or phone calls. I definitely hope to soon. In the meantime, you can find me attached to a boppy and at least one baby for about 20 hours a day. Please send food, water and clean sweat pants...

The Call of the Laundry

Between blankets and burp clothes, onesies and snap shirts, the laundry piles up quickly. The twins manage to dirty about a wash load per day. Fortunately, our on-site grandmother laundry service keeps up with demand.

Plus, we have a plentiful supply of replacement outfits and linens so we rarely have to double up receiving blankets. Though it does happen on occasion...

The Unkindest Cut

Even though it's not medically necessary, we decided to have Ryan circumsized. Now that we've had four days to recover, Megan would tell you that it was harder on her, but I'm not so sure Ryan would agree. Megan and Lucie conveniently went for a walk during the procedure leaving Ryan and I to face the "clamp". With a little help from the local anethesia and suger-water sucked from my finger, he survived with minimal discomfort.

Having witnessed a circumcision up close, I wonder why the Circumcision Clamp isn't listed under banned torture devices in the Geneva Convention? While we're at it, the speculum should probably be added as well.

Champagne and Burp Cloths

If someone had told me on our wedding day that five years later we'd have two kids, I'm not sure that I would have believed them. I guess it's a much easier feat to achieve when you get two at the same time!

Hopefully Lucie and Ryan will let us share a nice meal together tonight. Maybe later we can fit in a little getaway once the twins are sleeping through the night and can spend a weekend with family. For now, I wouldn't want to spend our anniversary any other way than to stare down into the faces of our little ones...

Fall Clothes

We try to go for a walk every day. Exposure to sunlight is supposed to help the twins sleep better at night though it doesn't seem to be working on Ryan and Lucie. Tonight, by the time everyone was changed, fed, burped, and bundled, the sun had long since departed so we set out for a nighttime stroll.

First mistake was not taking a flashlight, strobelight, or a light of any kind to signal a stroller crossing the street. We'll have to get one of those blinking bike lights in the future.

Though they were dressed warmly and nicely color-coordinated by yours truly (see photo), our second mistake was tucking blankets in the stroller under their arms instead of over. While both of them love having their arms free to swing about, the cool temperature meant some very cold hands after our 40 minute walk.

An Ounce a Day

Two more clean bills of health at today's peditrician's visit. Ryan tipped the scales at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and Lucie is now 6 pounds, 12 ounces. Both of them are gaining about 1 ounce per day.

We expect that rate to slow down as we attempt to ween them off the bottle. Unfortunately for Megan and me, the twins aren't able to get as much from the breast as from the bottle. Since their daily intake remains unchanged, smaller feedings means more feedings. So we're back up to 12 a day (just like during the hyper-feeding period) and once again testing the limits of sleep deprivation.

The Family

Our first family portrait. No fancy backdrop at Sears, no special lighting, no poses with hands on chins, but I think the shot turned out pretty well.

And this despite getting 3 hours of sleep the night before (and 4.5 the night before that, and 3.5 the night before that -- you get the pattern).

Super Boppy

Yesterday, we bought the mother of all boppies. Designed especially for twins, it looks like a sofa cushion with a large bite missing. Our dream is that Megan will eventually be able to simultaneously breastfeed both babies with the aid of the super boppy. Obviously I love the idea as it makes my participation unnecessary. Dare to dream...

Happiest Babies on the Block

On the recommendation of several friends, we bought a copy of the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. It took almost a week to find the time to watch, but after a single viewing tonight, I don't think it is an exageration to day that the video will change our lives.

Swaddle, Side, Shush, Swing, Suck is our new mantra. Even without a fancy mechanical swing or white noise-maker, both Lucie and Ryan fell into deep sleeps after our first attempt. We've received a lot of thoughtful baby gifts, but this DVD is now at the top of our lists.

Of course, we aim to have the two happiest babies on the block...

Fun times with family

Lucie and Ryan enjoyed their weekend with their Chris' family. How nice to be held and snuggled for hours on end! That is their dream life. Our dream life is having mutliple feeders and burpers on hand. Special thanks to Uncle Greg for being our first overnight guest and his willingness to awake every two hours for feedings.

Boppies for babies

Boppy pillows are one of those strange inventions that every parent knows about, yet people without kids have no idea about them. We use them primarily to prop babies/arms during feeding, but Lucie and Ryan also like to spend "tummy time" (strengthening neck muscles) on the pillows as well.

And, in a pinch, the pillows make handy cradles.
